O Brien Cup Final

12 Dec 2008

December the 9th was a historical day for Waterpark. The o Brien cup final between Waterpark and ST Clements kicked off at 12:30 at clonmel rugby club.
First half: Waterpark kicked off to start what would be a tough match. Waterpark captain Geoff Degan kicked from a penalty but narrowly he missed the posts. Then ST Clements had a penalty kick near the half way line and surprisingly they decided that they would kick it but they missed and the two teams were level 0-0 at the end of the first half.
Second half: the second half was a different game as from the kick off ST Clements managed to make there way through the Waterpark defence and score a try just beside the posts. There was a battle for twenty minutes with Waterpark behind in there own half. Waterpark lineouts were solid and the scrums were a major battle. Nearing the end of the match captain Geoff Degan got a penalty approximately 30 yards out and had no problem sending the ball over the bar. Soon after Ivan kiersey got the ball and made a fantastic run he went past several of ST Clements defence to score a try making the score 10-7 Waterpark. St Clements put Waterpark under pressure for the closing minutes of the match but Waterpark stayed strong and finally. Dunbar kicked the ball into touch final score 10-7 Waterpark

Waterpark College vs. St Camens on 11 November

28 Nov 2008

Yesterday Waterpark College played St Camens of Limerick in the quater final of the O'Brian cup. It was a glorious day at Waterpark. We started off the match with two early tries, through Ivan Kiersey and Darran Scannlon with Geoff Deegan converting one of the two. About 20 minutes later we got quick ball off the line-out from David Fitzgearld to Taigh Cambell to Geoff Deagen who gave a short pass to Ivan Kiersey who ran half the pitch for an amazing try. St Camens managed to score a try in the second half, but with the last move of the game St Camens had a scrum which was turned over. David Fitzgearld ran 20 meters to score a try. Geoff Degan converted with a drop goal to put the final scores at 26-10 to Waterpark. Waterark now progess to the semi-final in which they either play Abbey CBS or Youghal.

Thursday 9/10/08 Waterpark Vs Newtown

10 Oct 2008

This was the second of the senior’s games this season. Though it was only a friendly, both sides were out to win it from the start.

Waterpark had a solid starting line up, only missing Thomas Dunbar. The only problem the team encountered, was Kyle O’Donoughue and Darren Scanlon both being unable to lift in the line out due to hand injuries.

The match started well for waterpark, with them winning most of their lineouts and superior in the scrum, as well as Taidgh Cambell doing great work in the rucks. However, a bad bounce in front of waterparks 22 gave the newtowns second centre a lucky try. Waterpark had some good chances in the first half such as a good run from Kyle O’Donoghoue and a great kick from Stephen bance under pressure in his own 22, but they failed to score.

The second half started with waterpark getting most of the possession, and a break from ahmed acoura almost saw waterpark get a try, but he was pushed out to touch after getting over the try line. An unfortunate incident involving 2 waterpark players clashing as they went for a tackle, left Darren Scanlon with a split cheek, and he was immediately taken to hospital. The match continued to be an even game, even with Newtown’s Munster players coming off the bench, but Newtown’s fast paced second centre ran from his own 22, before offloading to the second row and getting a late try. Overall performance was promising, with both Stephen bance and Greg staff dominating their positions

Match Report

King Cup Final
Waterpark College 20 v St Coleman’s Fermoy 12

On Wednesday 16th April Waterpark College juniors contested the Munster King Cup final against St Colemans Fermoy.

Having won the toss Waterpark played with the wind in the first half and received kick off. Right from the start the game was played at a ferocious tempo with both sides putting in some big hits. Fermoy had the best of the opening exchanges and settled quicker. Dominating at the breakdown Fermoy made the possession count. Quick ball at a ruck on Waterpark’s 10metre line was the key to setting up the first score of the game for Fermoy. Fermoy’s scrum half got the backs moving and a good angled run from their winger saw them score in the corner.

From the restart Waterpark still looked nervous, and only for some excellent defence out wide with centre Kieran O’ Neill making some timely tackles Fermoy could twice have added to their tally. Waterpark’s defence started to give them a solid platform to get back into the game. Putting some nice phases together between the backs and forwards, Waterpark came more into the game. Fermoy’s defence was tested and they conceded a penalty at a ruck which gave Waterpark their first opportunity to get points on the board. Fly Half Tom Kiersey duly obliged and Waterpark were back in the game.
Waterpark were now playing with more composure and building some nice phases off forwards Shane Pierce, Philly Grimes, Robbie Cotter, Stephen Geraghty and especially Damien O Dwyer. A ruck inside Fermoy’s 22 and quick ball from scrum half Dylan McGath led to Waterpark scoring their first try. When the ball came to Tom Kiersey he had options to his right but Fermoy came up fast in defence. With a quick sidestep Kiersey left two defenders in his wake, but still had a lot to do. Jinking inside then outside he showed magical feet and agility to weave his way past four more defenders. With just the full back left he turned inside broke yet another tackle to go in under the posts for a fantastic score that brought roars of approval from Waterpark’s travelling supporters. Tom himself added the conversion and at half time the scores remained the same 10 – 5 in Waterpark’s favour.
Kicking off in the second half Waterpark looked in control but Fermoy showed tremendous work rate at the breakdown and started to claw their way back into the game. A huge kick from Fermoy’s centre put Waterpark under pressure and although full back Kevin Conway did his best to clear Fermoy robbed the ball and went over for an early score, which they converted. Waterpark were now up against it and Fermoy were playing the better rugby. Showing good patience though and intensity Waterpark matched up to Fermoy. With good defence out wide Waterpark caused Fermoy to fumble the ball. Kevin Conway pounced and stole possession just outside his own 22. With four men chasing and the full back to beat, he was off! Roared on by Waterpark’s supporters he left the chasing pack for dead before side stepping the full back as if he was not even there, and going in under the posts. Tom Kiersey again added the conversion to leave the score 17-12 in water parks favour.
Fermoy were not to be outdone though and battling their way back up the pitch they put Waterpark under enormous pressure. For a solid ten minute spell Fermoy were camped in Waterpark’s 22 but time and again solid tacking around the fringes kept Fermoy out. Eventually Fermoy turned the ball over and Waterpark mauled forward and kicked clear. In the next phase as Fermoy tried in vain to clear they were penalised for holding on and gave away a penalty. Waterpark decided to kick and the three pointer would put them 8 up. Tom Kiersey showed great composure to land the kick.
Fermoy now need 2 scores to win. From the restart Dylan McGath gathered and good work by Robbie Cotter and Greg Staff helped control the ball. Waterpark kept the ball in close and ran down the clock, kicking to touch to end a memorable game and capture the King Cup for the first time in the school’s history.
